Album Review

Exocrine- Legend

Exocrine drew me in with their debut album “Unreal Existence” in 2015 and have only gotten better since then. Their upcoming offering “Legend” is releasing on January 26th with more experiments and wild musicianship. They’re a wildly underrated band in tech death and deserve a ton more notoriety in my opinion. As I’ve stated in recent articles technical death metal has gotten stale. Not many bands catch my attention in the genre as they used to.

Exocrine has been putting a unique take on it the last few releases and “Legend” is a nice continuation of that. They’ve been using keyboards, brass, saxophone and other instruments that tastefully enhance their songs. You have their typical guitar wizardry, beautiful melodies and crazy guitar riffs. There are some solid grooves thrown in there for good measure. The vocals have always been a strong suit in Exocrine. Outside of adding cool backing track ideas, the band his tried singing on some parts to add to their sound. It works out pretty well honestly but most of it is still growling.

“Legend” is another solid addition to the Exocrine library that’s already very unique. The band impressively experimented with some new ideas, while simultaneously staying true to their sound. They keep pushing the boundaries of technical death metal and it’s honestly pretty exciting. There’s bands like Archspire, Beyond Creation, Obscura and Inferi that are pretty popular (and deservedly so) in the genre. “Legend” will be the band’s sixth release and have not gone more than 3 years between albums. Not only are they talented but work hard putting out new music pretty consistently.

“Legend” is another genre pushing album by Exocrine and another welcome addition to the tech death genre. It’s so fresh to hear bands include other instruments in their song. The singing is a great touch and really sounds good. The album is coming out on Season Of Mist on January 26th and is quite the opus. Exocrine keeps their sound fresh and exciting.
