Philadelphia’s Abortion Survivor is releasing their debut EP “The Back Alley: Chapter 1” today. The band previously released a 3 song demo a few years ago and are releasing the final product today. The 6 song effort is a brutal representation of an extreme metal band with some serious riffs. Not enough death metal bands groove hard and this EP really has a ton of it.
The thunderous drumming and riffs are found everywhere if that’s what you’re looking for. In a world of saturated music this EP is a straightforward banger. The relentless onslaught never stops in the Back Alley, but I did happen to find that new Six Feet Under song in there so I quickly ran away from it.
I like the vocals a lot. I tend to gravitate towards consistency when it comes to gutturals in extreme metal. But the style of all lows, mids and highs really fits the sound of the band. You never know what you’re going to get at every part, and can also understand the lyrics pretty well on top of it all. It’s one thing for a heavy set of gutturals, but it’s on a whole other level when you can understand the words. To me that is equally as impressive as can be in extreme metal.
You can’t help but notice the dark humor the band brings aboard about uh….abortion. It’s nice to see some bands inject a little bit of comedy and darkness into their music and Abortion Survivor has done that. Please support the band by downloading the EP on their bandcamp, and you can also preorder t shirts on there as well. If you’re looking for a fresh take on death metal don’t be shy and listen to this offering. This EP was a nice surprise to find and carries the torch for death metal for future generations to come.
