We’re here to put our two cents on the recently reformed Spawn of Possession, with a different drummer. Retromorphosis is putting out their debut album “Psalmus Mortis” February 21st on Season Of Mist. That drummer is KC Howard (Odious Mortem, Ex Decrepit Birth). Joining him is Jonas Bryssling (Guitar), Christian Muenzner (Guitar) Erlend Caspersen (Bass) and Dennis Rondum (Vocals). The record is a long time coming as the general public has heard snippets of info and formation of the band. Well it is well worth the wait for any death metal fan. While it has its technical aspects and nods to SOP, it’s groovier than one would anticipate. Musically it’s easier to digest than the technical insanity of Spawn of Possession.

The guitar melodies and riffs are so crisp and heavy, it’s not too focused on either style. My issue with modern tech bands is they forget they’re a death metal band. Retro has plenty of groovy, heavy ass riffs that punch you in the face. The vocal attack of Rondum is still fresh and unique. Howard’s drumming style is so solid he can add a ton of fills yet play to a great pocket when needed. His speed is great and can hear why his style fits Retromorphosis so well. Caspersen’s bass is so thunderous and clean.

The tech death community has been freaking out over this album and rightfully anticipating a huge release. The guys deliver with even more flavor and seasoning, with those sick grooves reminiscent of that legendary band. The production is just as tight and clear as the band. I’m not shocked how well written this album is and how great the individual performances are. The old saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” doesn’t apply here at all. The boys still have it and changed up the formula a bit adding more groove and just as much precision than previous SOP efforts. I’m personally interested to see if they’ll do some occasional tours (once a year) or stay a studio project. Either way this record is monstrous and should be treated as such.
