We had the chance to interview the mastermind of Defeated Sanity, Mr Lile Gruber. They are putting out another fantastic record this upcoming Friday Chronicles Of Lunacy. Check it out!
TMR: Explain the concept and meaning behind “Chronicles Of Lunacy”.
LG: The album’s lyrics revolve around all kinds of Mental disorders, delusions, childhood trauma, psychosis etc… manifesting in things like religious fanaticism, incel movement, capgras delusion, renfield syndrome, sexual fetishes etc….it fits pretty much perfectly with the band name and could have been our self titled record as well, but we’re not into that.
TMR: Adding Vaughn on guitar was a great move. Why did you decide to keep him in the band? And how has he contributed so far as a member?
LG: He just proved himself to be the man for the job that we wanted around. It’s hard to find someone that shows this kinda enthusiasm and expertise and at the same time fits with this group of individuals also. So it was a natural development. He’s been contributing on a few killer riffs and arrangements in the songs “Extrinsically Enraged” and “Condemned to Vascullar famine”. I’m pretty sure he will contribute more on futre releases. His time gets consumed a lot at the moment having to learn older songs to include into new live sets…but soon we’ll be writing again with him on board.
TMR: Now that there’s a full lineup was the songwriting process any different than your previous outputs?
LG: As I said, not much. I have written most of the material before he even came in, borrowed some riffs off him and some off Jacob and built the songs as usual.

TMR: How challenging is it to keep your sound fresh? Your average brutal death metal band doesn’t push the boundaries like Defeated Sanity.
LG: Very challenging. So challenging that I don’t know if I can come up with another brutal death Metal album after this. All the classic riffs have been written, the only chance to write classics is to work on new motives/rhtyhms/harmonies that haven’t been used. It will have to sound different to be fresh at all I think.
At the moment what I’m doing is finalizing a new Dharmata style record….that one sounds fresh and adventurous – but it’s cus I haven’t written music like that a lot. With anything slam/tech brutal the motives are running out. Album number 8 might be challening and take a while honestly.
TMR: What inspired the band musically and lyrically on “Chronicles Of Lunacy”? Any specific bands, topics or albums?
LG: Lyrically I already elaborated on that in question 1. Musically it’s been very much influenced by the Underdog brutal death metal bands and classic death Metal bands, as well as our own science to construct Progressive music and a little bit of Classcial and Jazz Fusion influence as always.
TMR: What is your favorite song from the upcoming album and why?
LG: For me it’s probably Odour of Sanctity. It’s kinda the style I always try to make a whole album off, but it always comes differently and instead every song has its own style. “Condemned…” for example has a completely different style that brings in almost every different flavor this band is known for. And in that it’s also kinda my fave…can’t really pick.
TMR: What is the band’s favorite song to play live? And which one is the toughest to play live? And why?
LG: We got not preferences really. Accelerating the rot and Amputationsdrang are the most insane songs I ever had to perform in my whole life. Wish me luck on them tours!
TMR: What is next on the horizon for Defeated Sanity?
LG: We wanna tour our asses off on this Chronicles set and in the following years present a lot of back catalogue stuff as well, songs that haven’t been in the set often. Expect some more songs that were written by Wolfgang Teske the co-founder of this band that has left us in 2010, RIP!
