200 Stab Wounds is releasing their sophomore effort “Manual Manic Procedures” June 28th. This also marks their first full length release on their new record label Metal Blade Records. They’re one of if not my favorite band from the newer old school death metal revival movement. They’ve never failed to disappoint in my biased opinion. I absolutely loved the two songs they put out two years ago “Masters Of Morbidity” and “Fatal Reality”. Then, this came along after talk of a second full length. Before I babble on even more about this up and coming band, I hold the first full length “Slave To The Scalpel” in high regard. In comparison to their peers in the OSDM revival, to me it’s like their “Slowly We Rot” or “Pierced From Within”.
“I’ll feel what kind of vibe the song has, and what topic would fit for that particular song,” vocalist/guitarist Steve Buhl explains. “The last song on the new record, ‘Parricide,’ is about someone going into a nursing home, and just blowing it up. The lyrics are about those type of corporations that don’t really give a fuck about those people. It’s all just a money grab.”

Now onto the music, it’s pretty heavy. Some sections are melodic don’t worry folks they don’t lose their edge by any means. The band tried some new things but didn’t stray away from gore soaked, heavy death metal. Hell, one track “Led To The Chamber/Liquified” is an instrumental split into two short songs! Then there’s moments like the second single “Ride The Flatline” that showcase their speed for quick death metal riffs and brings back some of their thrash metal influences.
Steve’s voice was perfect on the debut EP vocally, as far as his low end. It seemed to get a little higher on the two song effort. I’m a fan of super low gutturals, not much in the high end. Suffice to say it’s an awesome vocal performance. Some sections in the songs even bring you back to “Piles Of Festering Decomposition” vocally speaking.
The guitar solos are well placed and gnarly, with some sweet drum work and bass lines. I repeat I absolutely love “Slave To The Scalpel” and hold it in high regard. Is “Manual Manic Procedures” any better? I’m not here to say that. It’s an amazing album and that’s for the listener to decide. It’s another stellar entry into the 200 library. This band is destined for greatness and this upcoming album proves it.
