When I see deathcore I stereotypically ignore. I don’t enjoy vocal gymnastics and lack of riffs. But, this New England group brings the tech and….riffs? And melody? Crikey! “Culling From Gods” dropped last summer in July and I’ve been sleeping on this band for quite some time.
The Last King has been a band since their debut release in 2016. They’re a heavy, melodic (not over the top) band with intricate riffs and nasty breakdowns. Not too heavy leaning either style and a beautiful blend in fact. Beautiful enough it’s packed into 31 minutes over 8 songs. People with short attention spans love that.
The boys just opened for Nile at the Palladium recently, mad respect to the homies for that. As for “Culling From Gods” it’s a stellar record and possibly their best. I checked out their back catalogue and prominently dug “The New Age”. Then came time to check out the newest release and it’s so much better. The transitions, brutality, melodies and overall production is solid. There’s some sweet guitar leads that fit in perfectly and aren’t forced. The drumming is so cool, that grooves hard and also throws in some sick fills to keep up with their demanding parts. The album is an energizing banger that kept my attention and never had me waver. There’s some cool bass lines on this record too.
The Last King is a solid up and coming band that dropped their finest effort to date with “Culling For Gods”. Any metalhead needs to listen to this record and definitely catch a show if you are near NE. They’re primed for a sick run and this album is hopefully the beginning of better things for the guys. Like tours with solid bands? And endorsements? All the best for The Last King.
