Sulaco- Black Cloud

Rochester’s experimental/grind/death/punk/noise/whateverthefuckyouwannaccallthem legends Sulaco is dropping another pair of songs this Friday May 3rd. They dropped two songs last year “Vacant” and “Funeral Suit” which absolutely ripped. This year in 2024 they give us “Black Cloud” and “Dying On The Pass”. Usually, the guys give us traditional LP’S and EP’s like any other band. Unfortunately their longtime brother and band member Lon “Spoth” Hackett unfortunately passed on. That 2023 effort was in fact titled “Spoth”. My limited interaction with him was nothing but positive and cheerful, which I’ll always remember. I can’t imagine dealing with a loss this tremendous considering how long they’ve been a thing. My heart goes out to the guys in Sulaco and Lon”s family. Now to move away from the grief and literal Black Cloud.

While the guys have been dealing with tragedy, sorrow, possible depression and sad emotions they come back strong and with two heavy offerings. They took a lot of time off (a year plus) to write music and plan for the future. As you can tell they’re still a band which makes me very happy. Sulaco has been one of the better bands out of Rochester, New York and even with this unfortunate event still are making noise.

“Black Cloud” is everything you expect if you’re familiar with them. Heavy, chaotic, energetic and insane. A stellar track that never lets up from the moment you press play. It’s an absolute banger that’ll paralyze your neck for weeks. The riffs are well crazy, thanks to the guitar combo of Mason and Burke. The drums from Golding’s end are crazy, heavy and absolutely batshit crazy. Jason’s voice sounds like a manic psychotic (I mean that in a good, metal way!). The other song “Dying On The Pass” is no slacker either. It’s equally as impressive and invigorating.

You can check out the rest of their music in the meantime until these two new headbangers drop Friday. They also have merch, if you get down with the ‘Laco. Long live Sulaco.
